Is Your Marketing Team Performing Like a Jazz Band?
domenica, 9 novembre, 2014, 18:56 - Generale

Jazz bands, like effective marketing teams, are tightly knit collectives of talent, known for their attention to detail and passion for their craft. Each member plays an integral role in the outcome; but, while each instrument has a beautiful sound all its own, it’s not until everyone is playing together that things really start to sing.

There are many comparisons to be found…

Planning and Strategy / The Drummer — The foundation on which everything is built. The tone, tempo, and beat all follow the first few notes (if you’re a drummer) or the plan and strategy (if you’re a marketer). If the drummer isn’t solid, the whole thing is at risk. Imagine a new company or new product without a launch plan—the players are left with no choice but to the best with what they have, but everyone will be playing their own tune.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) / The Guitarist — Just as a jazz guitar amplifies the sound of the music to the listener, SEO amplifies the reach of online marketing initiatives and carries those carefully crafted messages further afield. And, while you may be tempted to leave the guitarist behind if you’re a jazz band, those companies without a talented SEO player on their team are more likely to be left behind themselves.

Content / The Bassist — This is all about progression and harmonic framework. Content is a key piece in the marketing strategy because it progresses the goals of marketing by providing material for both the inbound and outbound campaigns that nurture prospects through the sales funnel. Content is important for setting the style and tone and is the basis for the tune the entire band is playing.

Events / The Pianist — Probably the most likely to go solo and grab the limelight, but when well integrated, this player can carry the message in a way that’s unlike most others. With a tendency to be considered more of a tradition than a progressive way to get the message out there, events (road shows, webinars, trade shows, etc.) can be a powerful tool if you ensure this element is playing the same tune as everyone else.

Email Marketing / The Horn Section - I know, I know….the jazz purists in the audience are going to take issue with my use of the term “horn section” but stick with me. Email marketing is not unlike the wind instruments used in jazz; they grab your attention, get you listening, and punctuate the message. The right message at the right time is a combination that can’t be beat.

Online Marketing / The Vocalist — The most visible player on the team. Think social media and video marketing. Your vocalist had better have personality and charisma or else the listeners will tune out and all that work going on behind them is at risk of being missed. Your brand: loud and clear and out-front for everyone to notice. As with a jazz band, your marketing team might have additional players to these, but the goal is integration and harmonization. Getting it right requires discipline, practice, and constant adjustment—and the rewards are worth the effort.

Elaborating on Blue Note Records, students Bertrand Lanthiez and David Cocciante of ESAG Penninghen, Paris (France) created an interactive experience mixing up Jazz, graphic design and augmented reality.

Blue Note Records is an American jazz record label, established in 1939. It derives its name from the characteristic “blue notes” of jazz and the blues.

The project consisted in working on the Blue Note’s LP artwork by using augmented reality. To create their experience students employed the ARmedia Plugin for Cinema4D .
